Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer Review: It's Expensive But Worth the Money

dyson hair dryer professional

Despite what magazine lists and advertisements would have you believe, most hair dryers are one-size-fits-all. No dryer will make your hair exceptionally more voluminous and glossy than another. What your hair looks like comes down to technique, products, and, in large part, its natural characteristics. This Ultra Light Pro Dryer from Harry Josh is small, compact, and easy to handle and maneuver.

The Lightweight Rusk W8less Beats All the Pricey Hair Dryers I’ve Tried. And It’s Under $100.

To minimize heat damage, look for tools that feature multiple temperature settings because high heat isn't always necessary—especially for fine hair types. If you have the time, low heat is best for stymieing damage caused by heated hair tools, and don't forget to prep with a heat-protectant. You might already be using one, though, as many leave-in products include protective ingredients.

Our latest technology hides flyaways in a single pass. For a smooth, shiny finish.1

As a longtime beauty reporter and user of the Dyson Supersonic (I’ve had mine for more than three years now), I’m well-equipped to give a thorough review. I’m as satisfied with the hair dryer today as I was when I first unboxed it; I haven’t come across a better dryer, either. I’d always considered hair dryer attachments—additional parts that snap into the nozzle or slide over it for more precise styling—a total afterthought. I used to chuck them in a basket deep in my bathroom cabinet, only to recover them when spring cleaning rolled around.

How We Tested

But because it’s missing markings for the air-temperature settings, it’s impossible to determine at a glance which setting the brush is on. More importantly, it lacks an ALCI (appliance leakage current interrupter) safety plug, so if it shorts or is immersed in water, the device won’t automatically turn off and therefore could cause an electrical shock. Most hair dryers are effective at blowing hot air toward your head—sometimes quite fast—in order to speed along your hairstyling. It’s the small differences between models that can make a big difference overall, particularly with daily use. According to our Diversity Pledge, 15% of products in our newly-published market roundups will feature Black-owned and/or Black-founded brands. At the time of publishing, we were not able to find any professional hair dryers from a Black-owned and/or Black-founded business.

We’re happy to report that this dryer lived up to its promises in our lab, and our hair looked noticeably shiner after using it. Another plus is the temperature of the dryer—it got hot but not too hot which felt comfortable and dare we say, pretty much perfect. Post shampoo and conditioner, spritz on a healthy dosage of heat protectant along with your favorite stylers. For example, Oribe’s Royal Blowout Heat Styling Spray looks to repair split ends before your blowout, while Briogeo’s cream minimizes frizz and locks in moisture.

Dyson says the motor placement makes the weight of the dryer more balanced, since it’s not top-heavy. The difference isn’t huge, but over weeks of using the Supersonic, we found ourselves appreciating the configuration. If you have trouble holding a typical dryer overhead, the weight distribution of this one might make gripping easier, a reader told us. Our only complaint is that the nozzle attachments are pretty small, making it a challenge to dry large sections of hair. The final result was a nice textured blowout with a soft and smooth cuticle.

Ahead, read up on how we tested, reviewed, and determined the best hair dryers for seamless drying and styling pleasure. Unlike other blow dryers, which use fan blades to draw in air, the Supersonic instead uses what Dyson calls its proprietary Air Multiplier Technology to dry hair. It essentially works by taking in air from all sides, then forcing it through the center of the ring for a powerful blast of air. This design feature prevents hair from getting tangled in the air inlet grille, a whole fiasco which used to happen to me regularly with more traditional, vented hair dryers.

These 14 Professional Hair Dryers Deliver the Bounciest Blowouts

This concentrated airflow also helps the cuticle of the hair lay flat so that it will be shinier and less frizzy, according to Los Angeles-based hairstylist Kiki Heitkotter. While evaluating the Supersonic hair dryer, I focused primarily on performance, features and ease of use. I tested for drying time and looked closely at how my strands looked afterwards in terms of polish, frizz and any signs of damage.

We always enlist a range of testers for any review, but hair-care products and tools are another story. While some can be used across different hair textures, lengths, curl patterns, thicknesses, colors (natural and unnatural), and concerns, many are created with specific consumers and their needs in mind. When reviewing tools, we also take into account testers’ experience levels. If you’re investing in this styling tool, you’ll want to protect it from unsightly scratches when storing. The hair dryer stand is a convenient way to display your hair dryer and MVP attachments; if you prefer to keep it out of sight, you can tuck it away in Dyson’s own presentation case. Alternatively, you could take a simpler route and store it in a basket or bin in your bathroom cabinet.

Perfect for those who want quick styling with less risk of damage. One of our editors even described this hairdryer as bringing their normally flat hair to life and raved about their incredible results. Our only real criticism is that it doesn’t come with different attachments for different hair textures. While I wouldn’t consider the Dyson Supersonic to be heavy (it weighs 1.8 lbs), it can get a little uncomfortable if you’re styling for a while. I wouldn’t call that a con, but it in my book it is something worth noting.

The amplifier multiplies this airflow up to three times, producing a high-pressure, high-velocity jet of controlled air, for fast drying and precise styling. You might be searching for a face cream to address persistent dryness or a new nail product to add to your Sunday self-care routine; you may simply be browsing around for the latest launches to hit the hair market. No matter what you seek or your individual needs and concerns, Allure wants to ensure that you love anything we recommend in our stories. We believe that having a diverse team of writers and editors—in addition to the wide range of outside testers and industry experts we regularly call upon—is essential to reaching that goal. Sarah Han after using the Dyson hair dryer with smooth, frizz-free hair. It really depends on your hair’s length and texture, as well as how wet your hair is when you start blow drying.

But we still think it’s a quality device that works really well—it even comes with four attachments. It also has three different heat settings which we found were just the right temperature and easy to switch between, plus a pre-straighten tool that helped us achieve a sleek look in minutes. We tried this setting to touch up our hair in between washes and it really brought new life to our flat lengths. “Hair dryers can be heavy, inefficient, and make a racket…they can also cause extreme heat damage to hair,” James Dyson, the British inventor and founder of the brand, said in a press release. I have been a long time loyal customer of Dyson hair care technology. I’ve been using the supersonic professional dryer for the past 7 to 8 years.

I’ve also noticed my hair shaft has remained quite shiny even though I’ve become more lax with my regular trims and deep conditioning treatments. You can usually find her sorting through piles of beauty products — and testing the best ones on camera. Although the 1,875-watt Revlon Compact Styler is a wallet saver at around $10, the savings do not make up for the dryer’s added heft, its lack of attachments, and its reduced wind speeds compared with those of our picks. The Conair 1875-Watt 3-in-1 Ionic Styler has a long row of grills (and a brush attachment) instead of a circular nozzle.

Right now, it has an on-site coupon, so you can score 20 percent off. We got to work testing out a wide range of popular models in our NYC-based lab, assessing them on drying time, added attachments, airflow, and ease of use. This allowed us to see how each one performed and how they made our hair and scalp look and feel.

Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer Review: Everything You Need to Know About the Stylist-Approved Hair Tool in 2023

It’s versatile, powerful, lightweight, and prevents heat damage—plus the six attachments make it easy to change up your style. We also loved our budget pick, the Remington Pro Wet2Style™ Dryer. It comes with extra attachments, is easy and efficient to use, and delivers excellent quality for a very affordable price. Low maintenance and easy to use, the Remington Pro Wet2Style™ Dryer is one of the less expensive options on our list.

Honesty and transparency would be appreciated as we’re (sounded like there are a lot of professionals in the same boat) stuck here, waiting in the dark.

Meaning, I can work speedily without feeling like I’m burning myself. (In my opinion, the actual tool doesn’t get too hot either.) Despite its powerful motor, the Supersonic is relatively quiet. Celebrity hairstylist Graham Nation agrees, “When working with clients, I love to be able to hold a conversation and still give an amazing blowout,” he previously told Vogue. For what it’s worth, hairstylist Erinn Courtney and Los Angeles–based hairstylist known as Jay Artistry are also fans of the device—namechecking it as the best hair dryer of 2023. While we’re on the topic of temperature regulation, the Supersonic features four precise heat settings, three speed settings and a cold shot to set hair after styling.

These 14 Professional Hair Dryers Deliver the Bounciest Blowouts

With my hair at its longest, the Dyson hair dryer blows it out in four minutes flat. If I let it air dry a bit before before using it, it’s an even speedier three minutes. Yes, $400 can buy a lot of things, but should a hair dryer be one of them? However, after a few wash-and-go tests, our curly-haired testers found that they liked using the included DevaFuser attachment, a unique hand-shaped diffuser that helps dry curls and waves without losing definition.

Harry Josh Pro Tools Ultra Light Pro Dryer

With this version, however, I value some of the attachments as much as the blow dryer itself. If the Supersonic’s digital motor V9 is the star of the show, consider the attachments its supporting actors. The Revlon 1875-Watt Infrared Hair Dryer produced a wind speed of 45 mph (measured directly in front of the nozzle), slower than the speed we got from our picks. It weighs just over a pound, has a cord measuring 5.5 feet, and comes with a concentrator and a diffuser. But the mediocre specs, along with the gimmicky red lights that flash while you’re blow-drying, kept this dryer from being a pick, even though it was a particularly inexpensive model at the time of our tests. It’s no more effective than our other picks, but if you want the most pleasant hair-drying experience possible, the Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer provides that.

If you don’t care about weight, consider the InfinitiPro by Conair 1875-Watt Salon Performance AC Motor Styling Tool. Commonly found in drugstores, this dryer produces airflow that’s faster (65 mph) than that of our top pick and almost as hot (205 °F). At 1.3 pounds, however, it may feel heavy after you spend a couple of minutes holding it above your head.

What’s The Difference Between The Dyson Supersonic And Dyson Airwrap?

dyson hair dryer professional

It used to be our favorite dryer that came with a straightening pick, but we now prefer the Pattern Blow Dryer. We also tried the Hot Tools One-Step Detachable Straight Dry Paddle Dryer and the Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer and Styler, both of which were clunkier, heavier, and slower to dry hair than the Conair. Their designs also made it difficult for us to directly reach hair roots compared with the other paddle-style hair dryer brushes we tested. It’s heavy, but you don’t have to hold it high like a conventional dryer. It has a 5.5-foot hose that attaches to a 9-inch heat-producing wand. At 2 pounds, the wand alone is heavier than any of our dryer picks.

Best Hair Dryers in 2024, Reviewed by Allure Editors

The gorgeous GHD Helios 1875W Advanced Professional Hair Dryer is heavier and slower than our pick, the Rusk W8less—and three times the price. However, at over 9.5 feet, its cord ties with that of the Amika Accomplice for the second-longest cord of any hair dryer we’ve tested, and this dryer is especially beautiful. The EZ Dryer Ion is the most effective and efficient paddle-style hair dryer brush we tested.

A Powerful Yet Quieter Motor

dyson hair dryer professional

Although this dryer is just as fast as pricier models, it’s the heaviest of our traditional hair dryer picks, and its attachments can be hard to remove. During testing in our lab, we found that it left our hair feeling softer and shinier, and kept it feeling healthier in between cuts. It also has plenty of temperature settings to choose from (warm, hot, and cold) so you can find the perfect one for your hair texture.

If we were to make one criticism it’s that the cold shot button is placed in a slightly awkward position. The best way of describing the BondiBoost Sonic Hairdryer is a compact powerhouse! We tested it in our lab and were incredibly surprised at just how quickly it dried our hair. And it’s so quiet we could still hear music and the TV while using it (a big plus if you get bored while blow drying).

Whether it’s finding great products or discovering helpful advice, we’ll help you get it right (the first time). The motor sits in the handle of the dryer rather than in the head. The handle is straight and a tad thicker than that of the Rusk W8less, too.

But it also has the most buttons and slides and switches of any hair dryer we’ve ever tested, including a cool-shot button, a power-boost slide, an ion select wheel, and switches for speed and temp—whew! Dyson's professional hair dryer dries and styles every hair type – from straight and wavy, to curly and textured – with five styling attachments. Each attachment is engineered for even heat distribution, precise styling and fast drying, so you can style more clients in less time.

If you know of one we should consider, please email us at  and we will evaluate the product ASAP. Unfortunately, the dryer doesn’t come with detailed instructions, but we were able to watch a few online videos of how each attachment worked, and we achieved a bouncy, voluminous blow-dry in just over 20 minutes. The final result felt far more professional than we’ve ever been able to create with an average hair dryer. Yes, it’s very expensive but if you love your beauty gadgets and currently spend a lot on professional blow-dries, this is well worth the investment.

But as a product reviewer by trade, these hefty claims also make me arch an eyebrow. The Bio Ionic 10X Ultralight Speed Dryer is a tad lighter (0.92 pounds) than our top pick and has a slightly longer cord. However, the dryer doesn’t have separate wind-speed and temperature-control settings (if you want hot air, it must also be fast). We found that on the top setting, most dryers blew air at about 40 mph as measured a couple of inches away from the nozzle. That blowing air was around 200 °F (more if we held the dryer in place for a few moments). Although some dryers achieved faster wind speeds than others, interestingly that didn’t end up translating to notably or consistently faster dry times once we used them on our hair.

It does have minor shortcomings in the weight department and cord length, but hopefully these features will be addressed in a 2.0 version. Dyson just released a new Airwrap this past summer, so I’ll take this as a sign of good things to come with the Supersonic. The retro-looking Conair Pro Yellow Bird Hair Dryer is one of the hottest dryers we’ve tested (reaching over 245 °F). But at a pound and a half, it also ties for the heaviest dryer we’ve looked at. Its buttons are strangely placed and unlabeled, and it doesn’t have a cool shot.

Located at the intersection of Cleveland and Stewart Aves... I went to the Old Hickory House with my sister and Dad as a child. We moved to Texas so I haven't had anything that good since.

Lived in Dunwoody for almost 20 years and ate many a great meal at OHH. The closing makes me miss Dunwoody much less. On Northside drive, just a tad north of GT, is/was an Oga's and I think it used to be an OHH (based on reading ATM). The house includes a guest suite with wooden ceiling.

But as a kid, the inly thing I would eat on the menu was a chick FIL A sand which. At that time it was the only place I knew that had them. One of my most important family memories.

I have nothing but good memories eating at different Old Hickory House restaurants. I asked George to open one in McDonough where I live. I hope Old Hickory North lake never closes. Yes, Northside Dr at NE corner of Deering. Our family at there many times in the 60's, even had them cater several events for us.Dont' think it was made clear, but the Piedmont Rd location, now Cowtippers, was a restaurant and the corp offices (if it's the same address).

The passing of the Old Hickory House is sad for me, indeed. I believe that it closed around 2002. If you enjoy exploring the historic homes of famous, and not-so-famous people, there are a number of historic residences in Southern California that are open to the public as museums. Most of them are City, State and National Historic Landmarks There is some overlap with LA Local History Museums.

The Old Hickory House in Washington Rd was a solid go to for breakfast and lunch. (I'd mention dinner, but I was expected home at that age! So, Bill Waite was owner of the Augusta OHH. Fast fwd...I moved to Atlanta (1987). Today, there is nothing on the property. If I had my way, I'd help start a new appreciation of a perfectly Southern restaurant concept that should still be an integral part of the fabric of our Southern roots. Used to go to northside drive location in mid '50's while in school at GT, not sure but think it was the original location for OHH.

I grew up in the Northlake area and went to that location many times, usually with my dad, who liked to treat us. (Short stakes for the littles - that's what we all got). Now I like the biscuits and gravy, and somehow I've never eaten anything on the lunch/dinner menus.

They are listed here in alphabetical order. Sacramento is a bustling and vibrant city offering lots of great dining options and numerous cultural opportunities. Visit the California State Capitol Museum, the World Peace Rose Garden, Raley Field and much more. I worked at the Hickory House Commissary in Doraville in the mid 70’s as did many of my high school buddies. We made Brunswick stew and most of the food offered at the restaurants.

Great brunswick stew -- and one of the first places I ever saw those little jukeboxes at each booth. I was always a fan of the breakfast at Old Hickory House, especially the biscuits. Lots of good memories with the family and it always seemed packed for breakfast on the weekend. The Missions and Ranchos are a special designation of historic homes that have such a unique position in telling the history of southern California that they deserve a separate page.

I actually managed the pharr road location in the early 80s. I did most of the catering for the company as well. You cant find bbq or stew anywhere on the planet that compares to ohh. I have lived in the Atlanta area my whole life.

Was a resident of Dunwoody for over 10 years. OHH was a traditional meeting place, usually for breakfast at least weekly, with my best friends there. I have always looked forward to meeting there in Dunwoody when I revisit Atlana. The atmosphere nutured many good times.

This will make your slide decks recognizable and will enforce your brand’s message.

Marketing

If you crowd your slide with multiple main ideas, things look messy and unorganized, thus giving your presentation a poor design. Our next tip for creating a memorable presentation is to only use one single animation style throughout the entire slideshow. Any good presentation design tutorial these days will tell you that you should stay away from bullet points as best you can. They’re boring and outdated and there are better ways to showcase your content. Visuals should always add to your presentation, rather than take away. But you also want to make sure that each of your slides has some kind of visual representation so you’re not sharing boring words on a slide, like in the example below.

Appealing to the emotions of your audience will leave a strong impression and help them to remember what you said. Words are great for inspiring emotion—but pictures are much better. We strongly recommend using professional stock photos, like those from Unsplash or Pexel.

Especially if you want to bring attention to a figure or percentage point. In the presentation example above, all that’s used is a simple circle to make each figure a focal point. It’s really that easy, but many people leave it out of their presentations. The main message they’re trying to impart is a lot more impactful to the reader. Instead, follow Intuit’s lead and break up the rows with a bit of color.

Design Presentation templates

The next step is to create a presentation that will captivate a meeting room, an amphitheater, and even the world (hey, it doesn’t hurt to dream big). Screenshots of a program or app are very common in any blog post, but I think you can do a little better when it comes to presentations. Take a conversational tone in your presentation is a great way to encourage your audience to participate. Check out some examples of how to highlight your key information in bar charts. In the presentation example above, Contently uses that exact tactic to bring more attention to key numbers.

First, he presents the header presentation tip in a speech bubble. If you are presenting a complex idea to a group, especially a large audience, I would recommend having a ton of good examples. Now, I would try not to overdo it, but having too many it is better than having too few. Now if they would have used similar colors, or a single color the effect wouldn’t have been as strong or noticeable. Type #2: Investor Pitch Decks

Many times, the text gets lost or mixed in with the background because of complementary color usage. Thus, you should not have your presentation notes written plainly on the slide for all to see. This will make your slide look and feel chaotic for your audience. One way you can manipulate and direct the eye to go where you want it to is by adjusting the size, color and weight of your font, as you can see in our example. This way, your audience will immediately be guided to what you have to say next and what they can expect.

With eye-capturing visuals and an engaging layout, you’ll communicate important stats and hold everyone’s attention until the end. This template is great for an introductory meeting or pitch, where you have to summarize what you or your business does in a few, highly engaging slides. Design choices (fonts and colors, especially), must be applied consistently across a slide deck. The last thing you want is for your audience to pay attention to your design choices before your content.

Take this presentation from Venngage that uses a couple of different types of borders to make their slides look professional. Instead, you should use anchor icons to give the text something to hold onto and draw the audience’s eye. If you need some examples of good anchor icons, check out slide numbers 4, 7 and 9 in this presentation example. Read this blog on the do’s and don’ts of infographic color selection.

That’s why the presentation design needs to capture and hold the attention of your audience using a variety of animations and visuals. Go beyond plain images – include videos for a more immersive experience. With a focus on transmitting knowledge, your presentation design should incorporate a variety of visuals and easy-to-understand data visualizations. Most people are visual learners, so you’ll benefit from swapping text-based slides for more visually rich content.

So instead of just posting a boring screenshot, add a little more to the slide by using illustrations and product shots. If you are not sure what I am talking about, just check out how great the screenshots look at slide numbers 7 and 8 in this presentation. But in this presentation example, Jesse Desjardins uses a mix of wit and hilarious retro images to create a memorable and light-hearted presentation. This idea is kinda similar to showing off your company qualifications at the beginning of your presentation.

This helps your audience know that you are on the same point or idea, plus it just looks really good when done right. If you’re including a figure or number on your slides, I’m guessing you want the audience to actually see it. For example, in this presentation on slide numbers 14 and 25, the graphs nail all of those tips perfectly. Here is a simple template you can use to separate your headers, or main points, from your body text in a presentation. A great example of this idea starts on slide number 9 in this slide deck and continues throughout the rest of the presentation. Different types of presentations serve different purposes and sometimes it helps to work smarter, not harder when you are creating a unique presentation. In fact, the spacing, layout, and style used in this presentation makes it easy to repurpose the same images into an infographic. They’re compact and can convey a concept to your audience at a glance. You can even combine multiple icons to create custom illustrations for your slides. Transform your slides into an interactive presentation with Venngage’s dynamic features like pop-ups, clickable icons and animated elements.

Webinars are popular online presentations used for lead magnets and generating new sales and sign-ups. These tend to be informational presentations that lead to a sales pitch towards the end. There are a lot of reasons you might need to create a presentation for school – giving a book report, presenting an idea, sharing a hypothesis and study results, etc. There are a variety of different types of presentations and reasons that you would need one.

Strengthen your stage presence and own that stage like it’s your second home! Prepare for the unexpected by checking your equipment, internet connection and any other potential hiccups. If you’re worried that you’ll miss out on any important points, you could always have note cards prepared. Remember to remain focused and rehearse potential answers to anticipated questions.

So for a 10 minute presentation you should have at least 10 slides. My favorite way to do this is to pick out the core message of whatever I’m talking about and express it in a few keywords, as seen in this presentation slide below. Aim to eliminate everything that isn’t immediately relevant to the topic at hand, and anything remotely redundant. Cut any information that isn’t absolutely essential to understanding the core message.

A Carefully Restored Victorian House in Los Angeles

During FB season we would go there and drink beer before a game at grant field, left atlanta after tech and came back many years later for first time and they were every where. I expect that family made a lot of money out of the real estate over the years. The original location of the Forest Park OHH restaurant was @ or near 175 Main st, right where the intersection of Main St (back in the day) as you headed north towards Mountain View and Hapeville, merged with Old Dixie Hwy. I lived there until 1980 and of all places I ate out, OHH at this location was top on the list of wherever I went out to eat. Even though I'll soon be 81, I can easily handle my 3 hour drive to get back. An Atlanta buddy of mine told me that all of the OHH had closed, but it's good to know that's not the case and I'll find one of them the next time I'm in, as my employer, Mayor Ivan Allen said, "This City is Too Busy To Hate."

Catering

They had the best Brunswick Stew I have ever had. We used to go to the one on Hwy 29 in Lawrenceville as a kid in the 60's and 70's. We would go to the drive in and eat in the car. I didn't work there but ate there often and knew some of the waitresses. If there was an Oga's on Northside, it must have closed at least a decade ago, probably quite a bit longer.

FOR THE ROAD

Used to play two hours of tennis in the park behind Colony Square..is it still there? And then we'd all go to Old Hickory House and eat and eat and eat. I don't think they know what a biscuit is out here. It went downhill after it moved into the Days Inn. Many of the house’s original features have been preserved including wooden floors, decorative mantles, turn of the century door hardware, pocket doors, stained glass and original bay windows. No, you do not need a realtor to purchase a Lennar home.

Muller House Museum

I grew up at the Hickory House on Piedmont. We went there as a family all the time. My mother also got her pork outside cut.

The last couple of years, the house has been restored by Brooke Safford, a historic preservation developer who works in New York and Los Angeles. The goal was to create a home where the historic bones blend seamlessly with modern features. The neighborhood is which this beautiful house stood, is long gone. And all other properties have been demolished. With the exception of this house, which has been moved twice to a different location and now stands in the Angelino Heights neighborhood. The house was built in the 1800s and is known as the “John Wesley Ellis Residence” after the Presbyterian minister who commissioned to build this place.

Taylor House West Covina

Or JR'S Loghouse off PIB which is OHH clone. Jerry Romano started it when his OHH deal fell through. Stew recipe same as acknowledged to be his grandfather's, who started OHH. My parents managed the Old South Motel on Cleveland Ave at I-75... Eating OHH breakfast BBQ biscuits were awesome 👌 ALL their BBQ was.

Will Rogers' Home in Will Rogers State Historic Park

It was first build as a place which would later become the Good Samaritan Hospital. Though we love having you as our guests, we understand that, sometimes, having our tempting dishes and entrees delivered or picked up is just more convenient. Therefore, we make it as simple and convenient as possible for you to enjoy the best the Old Hickory House has to offer with prompt and friendly options. The original one in Forest park was on Main Street, the address was around 131. The empty lot is still there with a Wendy's being where the road originally was.

Indeed if you drive by the place where there was an Oga's during the JFK administration, there's no trace of any sort of dining establishment being at that location. There is a shuttered Mexican place near 17th but that always looked very sketchy. Fond memories of the Scott Boulevard location as a kid in the '60s.

Explore plans offered at Northlake

The lot is now cleared on that corner. Back in the 60's through eighties I frequented the Buckhead store, the Midtown Piedmont restaurant, and the one on Northside Drive. Also I think there was one out past 285 near where Spring Road comes into 41 that we used to go to i the eighties. I did not know there were any still open. They had a good menu, consistency and a following.

I remember wondering why they disappeared. I recall hearing there was some alleged poor management unrelated to the viability and profitability of the operations. With breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert options, we’d be happy to see you and yours any time of day. Check out our menus for full descriptions and feel free to ask any Hickory House family member for more information.

Offering a mouth-watering array of classic barbeque options as well as breakfast fare, Old Hickory House welcomes both residents and visitors with the hospitality and friendliness the ATL is known for. Over the last 45 years, we’ve created a menu that highlights our family recipes, including old favorites and must-haves to new tempting delights. Also we continue to offer catering to our customer when they place a $200.00 or more order, and with a minimum of 24 hour notice, we can gather a full meal of delicious options and get them to your home or business. Delivering within a 5 mile radius from our Northlake Parkway location, our delivery team works to make sure your order makes it your way in no time at all while maintaining its high quality.

We also delivered a couple times a week to the stores. I don't remember a location in Athens. I was here in the mid to late 70s and this was Poss Country when it cane to barbeque. There may have been one opened in the 80s. I'll see what I can find out from the "old Athens" group on Facebook.

Jerry romano, hence JRs.HE was the manager of memorial drive in the 60sor70s. Already knew the recipe as most managers were family. I have the utmost respect for Jack Black. I remember years ago we had one of Atlanta's famous ice storms and we were iced in for about a week. Jack Black opened his restaurant on Northside Drive (maybe others also) and fed the Georgia Power workers trying to restore power.

The recipes have been handed down from generation to generation. Our famous Brunswick Stew, sauce, in-house made banana pudding, and fruit cobblers are some of our customers' favorites! We now serve a great country breakfast with the biggest pancakes and biscuits around. There was a Hickory House location on Northside Drive at Deering Road before it was an "Oga's" or whatever.

While the basic melody was nailed down pretty early, the accompanying chords have seen a lot of variations along the way. The earliest recordings of the song—like Clarence Ashley and Gwen Foster’s 1933 “Rising Sun Blues” and Woody Guthrie’s version from 1941—were generally in Appalachian folk or bluesy styles. Among my favorite other interpretations are Josh White’s brooding solo take and Ronnie Gilbert’s jazzy three-piece arrangement with the Weavers. In this House of the Rising Sun guitar chord chart, we are going to take a look at a fantastic song by the Animals. This song you can use either a strumming pattern or a picking pattern.

The song is in 6/8 time—that’s six eighth notes per bar, counted, “One, two, three, four, five, six.” If you are not familiar with this meter, play along with the video to get a good sense of how it feels. I like to play the song with a flatpick, mixing things up with strums and single notes, as transcribed in the first eight measures. You could keep things even simpler and go with straight strumming throughout, or use a basic fingerpicking pattern—whatever works best for you. This selection, “House of the Rising Sun,” is cautionary tale of things gone wrong in New Orleans.

Examples & Best Practices of Brutalism in Web Design

brutalism design

While the cheap, raw materials that architects used to construct brutalist buildings allowed for fast rebuilding and growth, the looming, rugged forms gained a negative reputation for their seeming coldness, harshness, and association with Communism. I've found the best way to determine if neo brutalism is suitable for your website is to learn about it. I'm here to help you dive into neo brutalism UI design head-first so you can decide if you want to transform your website into a neo brutalist masterpiece. I'll begin by sharing what neo brutalism is, and then we'll go into why it's so popular. I also chatted with HubSpot user experience (UX) and product team members to dive into how neo brutalism can impact user experience and when you should consider using it. If you've ever encountered a website characterized by bold elements, bright colors, and oversized, graphic typography, you've experienced neo brutalism design.

What Is Brutalist Architecture?

In an old Xeroxed flyer for a punk show was information on how to absorb those songs; in an iconic ad for Maxell cassette tapes lurked signals about the spirit of rock. "We are privileged that our first project in Canada should be so transformative and focused on contributing to Toronto's public realm," said Rafael Viñoly Architects partner Román Viñoly. Developed by Madison Group and totalling two million square feet (185,806 square metres) the project will consist of two individual properties holding two skyscrapers each, which will host a mix of residential, retail, and office spaces. Studio founder Rafael Viñoly died last year, and the studio said he played a role in the design before his passing. A newly constructed wing at the building's southern end contains an additional exhibition hall with offices above, finished externally with a blind concrete facade decorated with the impressions of windows, sills and lintels. Plato Contemporary Art Gallery's rotating walls create two entrances on either side of the building, leading into a central reception, ticket office and cafe area.

Interior Design Trends That Will Define 2024

Red carpets have been printed with the black outline of an aerial view of the Austin city grid. But for the hushed audience at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art’s kickoff event in February of its “Art of Noise” exhibition, the breathy scales constituted only part of the experience. This article is part of our Museums special section about how institutions are striving to offer their visitors more to see, do and feel. SFMOMA explores the galaxy of visual and technological design that has long revolved around the music we love. "This will be the only Canadian project that the visionary architect Rafael Viñoly contributed to himself, and the firm's first-ever project in Canada," said the team.

It’s worth pausing to consider where these styles come from, the intentions behind them, and what they mean for UX. In some ways, brutalism is related to minimalism in general philosophy, but there are key differences. Minimalism also takes a less-is-more approach, reducing design to its essential elements. At the same time, it usually doesn’t go as far as stripping a design down to bareness. The reason why brutalism has been able to jump between such wildly different design disciplines is that it tends to describe more of a mindset than visual characteristics.

Constructed predominantly of concrete, the building contains tiers of floor-to-ceiling windows. Stepping up close to the library, you feel the looming presence Brutalist buildings can evoke. That concept reminds me of the complex writing style of William Faulkner. His sentences are sometimes convoluted, sometimes segmented, and often grammatically incorrect. Some designers are becoming bored with simple, straightforward, polished design.

Because of their heavy poured concrete construction, Brutalist buildings are difficult to renovate (and tear down). However, one successful example is the Centre National de la Danse outside Paris, originally a 1972 administrative building; it transformed in 2003 into a public space and dance center. London's Trellick Tower, designed by architect Erno Goldfinger, is a 31-story Brutalist housing unit completed in 1972 that now has landmark status. Other significant Brutalist buildings in London include the Hayward Gallery in 1968 and the National Theatre (1976) in London's South Bank.

Often inspiring strong emotions—both those of love and hate—Brutalist architecture remains one of the most divisive architectural styles of the modern age. “The style is characterized by raw, exposed concrete and bold geometric forms,” Mark Bittoni, principal of Bittoni Architects says. “You’ve certainly seen it before in many cultural and civic buildings built between the 1950s and ’70s.” With countless examples spanning countries and continents, the look has both historical significance and remains popular—particularly in residential design—today. In this guide from AD, discover the history and impact of Brutalism, study the controversial reactions to the look, and visit famous Brutalist buildings around the world. Fast forward to 2023, however, and brutalism is making a serious comeback. In the Oscar-nominated Tár, a brutalist Berlin apartment gathered just as much audience intrigue as Cate Blanchett character of Lydia.

brutalism design

Known locally as the "glasshouse," the design of the Smithsons' Hunstanton Secondary Modern School emphasizes its long, rectangular, glass-glazed central structure, whose steel framework is visible even from a distance. Such features led architectural critics to use the term "New Brutalism" for the first time in describing the building. The rectangular structure includes two stories, with classrooms located on the first floor, and the interior design makes innovative use of staircase columns to access no more than three classrooms, minimizing the noise and disruption of student movement. The Smithsons saw Brutalism as "an ethic, not an aesthetic." They wanted to focus on an idea of functionality connected to the realities of ordinary life in the post-war era.

During its rise in the ‘60s and ‘70s, it was the embodiment of a philosophy that championed functionality and social responsibility in design. Ultimately, it's up to you to decide how neo brutalism fits your branding and how willing you are to overhaul your site to match this design style. If you still have reservations or are unsure about it, you can always run an A/B test (though, again, it would take a lot of effort to create a site this style for testing purposes). However, if you're looking for a buzzy, fun design style, neo brutalism may be just what you've been waiting for.

Brutalist design originated in the mid-20th century, inspired by the architectural ideas of Le Corbusier and popularized by British architects Alison and Peter Smithson. The term “Brutalism” derives from “béton brut,” emphasizing the use of raw concrete as the primary material. This architectural style, prevalent in the 1950s to 1970s, prioritizes functionality and honest expression of materials, featuring bold, geometric forms and minimal ornamentation. Initially embraced for its utilitarian vision and cost-effective construction, Brutalism left an indelible mark on urban landscapes worldwide.

From the mid-20th century, this style rose in popularity before reaching its peak in the mid-1970s, when it came crashing down as a model of bad taste. But that's all changing now, with a renewed interest and appreciation for this once derided architectural style. “Brutalist design is striking and statement-making—it can be the perfect addition if you are wanting a dose of drama,” says designer Nadia Watts.

Half of the structure's concrete was precast in steel molds and used darker cement, while the rest was cast in wooden frames onsite. Both were left unfinished so that contrasts in color and texture are created, as the second-floor pylons are darker and rougher in appearance, rising to the third floor's lighter and smoothly repetitive forms. The sense of tonal shift created as the building ascends contrasts with the inverted pyramid shape that draws attention downward through the vertical lines of the pylons and window frames to the ground floor, as if emphasizing the building's public function. The building's architects were influenced by Le Corbusier, as well as by Italian Renaissance town halls, and the nearby granite structure of Alexander Parris's Quincy Market (1825). From the beginning, the building was controversial, with calls for its demolition beginning while it was still under construction. This split of opinion is typical of the passionate and divergent views that Brutalist architecture can arouse.

Even if you are familiar, it can be hard to keep track of the difference between all of the major design periods and their contemporary influences. And if you're feeling inspired, shop the rough-around-the-edges pieces throughout this cheat sheet to brutalist design. If you're like us, you've heard the term brutalism thrown around by design-minded style stars. Blame it on the widespread popularity of '70s-inspired fashion trends, historical films, and disco music.

The Essential Guide to Brutalist Design

brutalism design

Apart from design examples of Figma and Gumroad, we have found some exciting Neu brutalism that is worth noticing. Neu Brutalism being an emerging design in the trend is not yet accepted globally by all. Therefore, let’s look at the plus and minus of Neu brutalism that we have gathered from multiple designers’ POVs. It uses design elements that are in their raw and unfiltered form, often without unnecessary decorations.

Where to Buy Brutalist Furniture and Décor

Brutalist design’s nostalgic qualities and retro appeal have resonated with a younger generation, drawn to its mid-century modernism influences and timeless aesthetic. Additionally, contemporary artists and designers have blended Brutalist elements with other styles like minimalism, industrial design, and modern architecture, creating fresh and unique expressions. Choui also identifies “the uncompromising celebration of raw materials and the transparent integrity in its construction” as defining characteristics of Brutalist design.

It can be a good option if you are looking for a way to stand out from the sea of landing pages, hero images, and highly stylized calls-to-action, in favor of something more honest and straightforward. There are a number of sites that strive for a kind of honesty in their materials. In essence, a website is a vehicle for communication using text and images. To achieve this, some designers might utilize a sans serif font, while others might bring in something even more jarring...like Comic Sans. A Brutalist-inspired residence designed by Geddes Ulinskas Architects. However, this rule-bending design technique isn’t always well-received, no matter how closely you follow its basic principles.

“I noticed more and more interest in brutalist architecture,” she says. “People were excited about it and loved the graphic quality of it.”  The hashtag #brutalism has over 500,000 images and conservation groups are increasingly trying to save examples of Brutalism, which are all too often demolished without a second thought. Countless Brutalist buildings have been torn down since the style went out of fashion in the '80s. While some consider them eyesores, many others believe that their destruction is both losing a piece of history and losing a piece of beautiful architecture. Still, many examples of Brutalism can still be found throughout the world, especially in London and notable American and Canadian cities. In the case of architecture, there's no architectural style that exemplifies this principle better than Brutalism.

Famous Examples of Brutalist Design

brutalism design

Web brutalism is beginning to take on a new meaning, quite different from the spirit of the architectural movement. Rather than just focusing on stripped-down UIs with raw or nonexistent styling, some designers interpret brutalism to mean rebelling against oversimplified design by intentionally creating ugly, disorienting, or complex interfaces. Brutalism in digital design is a style that intentionally attempts to look raw, haphazard, or unadorned. It echoes early 1990s-style websites (think Craigslist and the Drudge Report).

Alison and Peter Smithson, along with the photographer Nigel Henderson and the artist Eduardo Paolozzi, organized the 1953 Parallel of Life and Art exhibition at the London Institute for Contemporary Arts. Lasdun also attempted to keep the public in mind when designing the space, using large outdoor terraces to engage the public. Argentina's National Library was designed by Clorindo Testa, who is credited with helping bring the Brutalist movement to Argentina. The building was designed in 1961 and was built on the former grounds of Unzué Palace, where the residence of former president Juan Perón and his wife Evita had lived. Construction didn't actually begin until 1971, with the library being inaugurated in 1992. Political upheaval and continual changes in leadership led to long delays in the execution of Testa's vision.

And this fall, Archinect, a digital platform for architecture based in Los Angeles, launched a line of coffee called Brutal in partnership with Yeekai Lim, a former architect and founder of Culver City’s Cognoscenti Coffee. The Smithsons' Economist Building in London's St James's (1962–64) showed how Brutalist ideas could be deployed in sensitive settings. Its cluster of three towers of different heights with an elegant plaza at ground level allowed the creation of a deliberately complex relationship to its historic site. Outside London, the Preston Bus Station (1968–69) by Keith Ingham and Charles Wilson of Building Design Partnership saw Brutalism used to give municipal civic identity to major pieces of infrastructure.

Brazil was another center of Brutalist activity, just as it was of developments in Constructivist and Concrete Art following the Second World War. In the 1950s, the São Paulo-based architect João Batista Vilanova Artigas founded the so-called Paulista School, a loose association of Brazilian architects all based in the city who favored the use of exposed concrete, rough surfaces, and monumental dimensions. The school built upon the influence of the Brazilian Carioca school that began in 1935, but in the post-war era began employing concrete, one notable early expression of its aesthetics being Affonso Eduardo Reidy's Brasil-Paraguai Elementary School (1952).

The Unité d'Habitation in Marseilles, France was his first project in 10 years, World War II having interrupted his practice. Completed in 1952 and created as housing for the working class, Le Corbusier's design called for a giant reinforced concrete framework fit with modular apartments. The mammoth complex, which could house up to 1,600 people, was largely devoid of decorative elements and laid the framework for future Brutalist projects. When it comes to Brutalist design, Alison and Peter Smithson were among the style’s earliest adopters and prominent leaders in British Brutalism.

King and Mattioli also point out that brutalism extends beyond architecture and interiors—a piece of furniture or decor can also bring a more subtle brutalist-inspired touch to a space. Mattioli makes a three-legged steel stool, for example, whereas King has a fondness for working with a Le Corbusier concrete lamp or a Rick Owens bronze table. (Owens, by the way, has his own brutalist-style home in Concordia, Italy.) Concrete floors too are often microtopped—or covered with a coating that gives them an elegant sheen. One of the most notable examples of Brutalist architecture at UCSD is the Gilman Drive Parking Structure, located on the university’s main campus in La Jolla. Designed by the architectural firm Moore, Ruble, and Yudell, the Gilman Drive Parking Structure was completed in 1970 and is a prime example of the Brutalist style. The building features large, sweeping concrete forms, an emphasis on raw materials and construction techniques, and innovative use of space, all of which are hallmarks of Brutalism.

“Many Brutalist interiors lacked interior finishes like drywall, tile, and paint, and just exposed the structure of the building, considering that to be an 'honest' expression,” says Reggev. A central desire for honesty resulted in leaving structural materials like concrete exposed and unadorned. But it also manifested a preference for bringing in natural and authentic elements, rather than materials representing something they're not (Reggev uses faux wood painting as an example).

After a thorough analysis, I realized Brutalism, as a concept - is huge. The weird elements, intentionally bizarre or chaotic designs, off-putting concepts, splashes of colors, uneven gradients, huge fonts, sharp animations, and so much more. The colors used in this style are typically less vibrant to create a more muted and understated look that aligns with the raw, unapologetic aesthetic of Neo-Brutalism. Furthermore, there’s always a primary color that serves as a brand color. Neubrutalism design doesn’t follow a strict set of rules when it comes to creating illustrations and elements. However, the objects in this style often look like they come from old video games, ads, or pop culture.

Aside from Le Corbusier, Marcel Breuer is among the most recognizable Brutalist architects, and the Armstrong Rubber Company represents some of his best work. Located in New Haven, Connecticut, the building was turned into a boutique hotel, which opened in 2022. The Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole Federal Building and US Courthouse designed by Joseph G.F. Farrell’s firm Architects Hawaii. While Brutalism was highly popular for a few decades, over time, public opinion began to shift. This, in addition to a changing economic and political environment, aided in its decline in popularity.
